RICS Building Surveying Conference 2026 – What to Expect (and Why It’s Worth Your Time)

If you’re in the world of building surveying, the Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors Building Surveying Conference is one of those dates that tends to come around every year and quietly remind you why it’s worth getting out from behind the desk.

This year it’s taking place on 7th May 2026 at Convene 155 Bishopsgate, right in the heart of London near Liverpool Street. It’s an easy venue to get to and, as usual, it’s expected to draw a strong crowd from across the profession. You’re looking at a full day, starting in the morning and running through into the afternoon, with a solid chunk of CPD on offer. But in reality, most people don’t go just to tick that box.

What makes this conference stand out is that it’s not overly theoretical. The sessions are usually grounded in what surveyors are actually dealing with day to day, which is what makes it worthwhile. Expect a mix of case studies, legal insights and practical discussions that reflect the kinds of issues that come up on inspections and in reports week in, week out. Things like defects, liability, fire safety and compliance aren’t exactly new topics, but the way they’re evolving means there’s always something useful to take away.

There’s also a big focus on regulation, which isn’t surprising given how much things have shifted over the past few years. Building safety, energy performance and retrofit are all high on the agenda, and rightly so. Clients are asking more questions, expectations are changing, and surveyors are increasingly expected to have a clear handle on it all. The conference tends to do a good job of breaking that down into something practical rather than just repeating policy headlines.

Technology is another area that’s continuing to creep further into the conversation. You can expect some discussion around AI and digital tools, but usually with a fairly grounded take. It’s less about replacing surveyors and more about how tech can actually help streamline workflows, improve consistency and cut down on the time spent on admin. That’s the part that tends to get people’s attention, especially when reporting is involved.

Sustainability and retrofit will almost certainly feature heavily as well. It’s no longer a side topic, it’s becoming a core part of what surveyors need to understand. The challenge, as always, is balancing performance improvements with the realities of existing buildings, particularly older stock. These are the kinds of conversations that are much easier to get your head around when you hear how others are approaching them in practice.

One of the biggest benefits of the day, though, isn’t actually on the agenda. It’s the chance to speak to other surveyors. Whether it’s over a coffee before things start or in between sessions, those conversations are often where you get the most honest insight. You quickly realise that a lot of the challenges you’re dealing with aren’t unique, and it’s always useful to hear how others are navigating them.

Alongside the talks, there’s also the exhibition side of things, which is always worth a wander. You’ll find a range of companies showcasing tools, services and solutions aimed at the surveying world. Some of it you’ll already know, some of it you won’t, but it’s a good opportunity to see what’s out there and how things are evolving.

We’ll be there as well. Scafol Surveying Solutions will have a stand on the day, so if you’re attending, come and have a chat. Everything we’ve built has been focused on making survey reporting quicker and more straightforward, particularly when you’re on site. The whole idea behind Scafol is to reduce the amount of time spent writing reports after the inspection, without compromising on quality.

If you’ve come across us before and want a closer look, or you’re just curious about how others are approaching their reporting process, it’s worth stopping by. There’s no big sales pitch, just a chance to talk through how it works and see if it might suit the way you operate.

All in all, the conference is one of the better industry events to attend. It’s practical, relevant and gives you a good sense of where things are heading. You’ll come away with a few ideas, a bit of perspective, and probably a reminder that the industry is moving faster than it sometimes feels when you’re stuck in the day-to-day.

If you’re going, it’ll be a good one. If not, it might be worth making the effort next time around.
