A Day at the Sava Residential Surveying Expo: What We Heard in Coventry

It was a real pleasure to attend the Sava Residential Surveying Expo again this year on behalf of Scafol. Held at the Coventry Building Society Arena on Tuesday 6 October, it remains one of the best days in the residential surveying calendar for taking the temperature of the profession, and this year was no exception.

A room that reflected the whole profession

What stands out about the Expo is the breadth of people in one building. In a single day we had conversations with established, well-known firms, small and medium-sized practices, recent Sava graduates just starting out, and large national corporate surveying firms. Each group looks at the same problems from a different angle, and that mix is what makes the chats so valuable.

The established companies talked about protecting quality and consistency as they grow. The smaller practices were candid about the pressure of doing everything themselves: surveying, marketing, quoting, chasing and writing up. The graduates were keen, curious and, understandably, eager to find tools and habits that set them up well from day one. The national firms were focused on scale, standardisation and keeping surveyors productive across large teams.

What the programme covered

The day was organised around a technical CPD stage, offering five hours of CPD in total, alongside a careers stage featuring Sava School of Surveying graduates and employers, and a large exhibition hall. The technical sessions were pitched at topical issues affecting residential surveying today, and the careers programme gave newcomers a clear look at the routes into and through the profession.

It was also encouraging to see the Expo supported by a broad range of firms and service providers, from surveying practices and national networks to property data and conveyancing-related businesses. That kind of cross-section tells you a lot about where the sector’s attention is.

Themes that kept coming up

Across the programme and the conversations around it, a few themes were hard to miss. The first was time. Surveyors want to spend less of it on administration and more on inspection and professional judgement. Industry voices ahead of the event, including Houzecheck, made the point that technology should remove unnecessary admin so surveyors can focus on their expertise, not replace it. We could not agree more.

The second was speed without compromise. Clients expect faster turnarounds, but nobody we spoke to was willing to trade quality for pace. The practical answer is a more joined-up workflow, where the information captured on site flows straight into the report instead of being re-keyed at the office.

The third was the next generation. Meeting so many new graduates was a highlight. They arrive comfortable with digital tools and expect their working environment to match, which is one reason we offer a free student plan.

Why this matters to us

Scafol was built by surveyors, for surveyors, so days like this are less about marketing and more about listening. Hearing first-hand how independent practitioners, regional firms and national networks work, and where the friction sits, directly shapes how we think about offline-first capture, CRM, survey writing and report generation as one connected platform.

Our thanks to the Sava School of Surveying team for putting on such a well-run day, and to everyone who stopped to chat with us.
